Waterproof Zipper vs. Airtight Zipper: Which One Does Your Product Need?
Buying a “waterproof zipper” sounds simple — until you realize the market means two very different things by it. One blocks liquid water. The other holds air pressure. Pick the wrong one and your product fails in the field, no matter how good the zipper is.
Two Problems, Two Zippers
Watertight (water blocking). The zipper needs to stop liquid water from passing through: rain, spray, splashes, brief immersion. The enemy is water pressure and dynamic flexing.
Airtight (pressure retention). The zipper needs to keep air inside a pressurized chamber — an inflatable boat, a sealed enclosure, a buoyancy module. The enemy is slow leakage over hours or days, under constant pressure and repeated inflation cycles.
How to Decide
Ask two questions:
- Does the product hold internal air pressure? If yes, you need an airtight zipper. Water resistance alone won’t retain pressure — the seal geometry and film structure are different.
- Is the product exposed to water but not pressurized? Then a watertight zipper is usually enough — lighter, more flexible, and more cost-effective.
IPX Ratings as the Shorthand
- IPX5–IPX6 — protected against jets and heavy spray. The right target for outdoor gear, rain-exposed bags, and equipment cases. This is the watertight zone.
- IPX7–IPX8 — protected against temporary or continuous immersion. Products in this zone usually also need pressure retention, which puts them in airtight territory.
Spec Beyond the Rating
An IPX number is a lab result on a new sample. Real products flex, age in humid heat, and cycle through ice and sun. That’s why bonding structure matters more than the rating: a hot-melt-cast TPU film fused into the webbing resists delamination far better than a laminated layer that can peel at the interface.
Quick Reference
| Your product | Sealing need | Typical rating |
|---|---|---|
| Rain jacket, dry bag, motorcycle gear | Block water jets/spray | IPX5–IPX6 |
| Equipment case near washdown | Block heavy spray | IPX5–IPX6 |
| Inflatable boat, SUP, air chamber | Hold pressure + immersion | IPX7–IPX8 |
| Sealed protective enclosure | Pressure retention | IPX7+ |
At ZIZIP we split this clearly into two product lines: HydroSeal for water blocking and AeroSeal for pressure retention. If your use case sits between the two, tell us the working conditions and our engineering team will point you to the right configuration.
